Welcome to the first and oldest Classics distance graduate program in the country!  The UF Department of Classics is proud to offer this opportunity for teachers with a Latin background who’d like to further their education. We offers LIVE synchronous courses in Latin language and Roman culture and history, as well as a two-week summer intensive Institute on the beautiful UF campus.

Distance Learning Director: Dr. Velvet Yates

Please notify Dr. Yates via email of your intent to apply to the program.  Include your degree-granting institution (B.A. or M.A.), so she can verify that its accreditation is recognized by the University of Florida before you go through the application process.

Want to Apply for 2024?

Applicants must be employed in education or Classics (usually as a Latin teacher) at an accredited K-12 institution or higher, and have taken 2-3 years of college-level Latin. When you apply to UF please follow the instructions for a regular graduate application (NOT to a distance program), and select Summer B 2024 as the start date. In addition to the regular UF application materials, please submit a writing sample (this can be the ‘statement of purpose’ for Master’s applicants, but should be a research paper for PhD applicants). Please send proof of employment to Dr. Yates (this can be a letter or official email from a supervisor, principal, etc.). Please contact Dr. Yates for further information.

Potential applicants are encouraged to attend the Open House Zoom Q&A session on February 2, 2024, 7-8 pm Eastern time. Please contact Dr. Yates for the Zoom invite. Applicants are also invited to attend to meet and ask questions of Classics faculty in Zoom on February 19, 2024, 7-8 pm Eastern. Applicants also have the opportunity to meet and talk to current students in the distance program on March 4, 2024, 7-8 pm Eastern, in a Zoom session hosted and run by the students.

Applicants are required to register for an online Latin entrance exam by emailing Dr. Velvet Yates, Distance Learning Director, no later than Friday, February 7, 2024. Please include the name and email address of a proctor to administer and supervise your exam, on either Friday, February 9 or Saturday, February 10 (whichever is more convenient). The exam will consist of sight translations of one prose and one poetry passage from standard authors, plus parsing questions based on the translation passages, lasting two hours. Please contact Dr. Yates to look at an old exam.

We no longer require Ph.D. applicants to visit the UF campus, nor do we require GRE scores any more.

Deferred enrollment is not allowed. Upon admission into the distance learning program, entering students are required to attend the entire Summer Latin Institute, held at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The 2024 SLI will be held July 8-18; Dr. Victoria Pagan will be teaching Roman Historians.

To ensure full consideration, applications and all supporting materials should be received no later than Friday, March 8, 2024. Please request that your institution send official transcripts directly to UF well in advance of this deadline.
