Introduction to the Classics Distance Graduate Program

Most teachers cannot afford to leave their jobs, their families, and their homes to pursue graduate degrees. The Department of Classics at the University of Florida has established a post-professional program intended to help teachers of Latin advance their expertise in the discipline by taking graduate-level distance seminars during the regular academic year (Fall and Spring) so that they can complete degree requirements while maintaining their local residency and keeping their current employment.  These seminars are conducted LIVE one evening a week via Zoom, so students get as much of an ‘in-class’ experience as possible.  Students also get a fully face-to-face classroom experience in the two-week Summer Latin Institute, held in July on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. Through this unique hybrid program, we extend to teachers — no matter where they reside — workable paths to earning the M.L., M.A., and the Ph.D in Latin and Classical Studies.

Applicants must be currently employed as teachers, and have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Classics or a Classics-related field.  Applicants must also have 2-3 years of undergraduate Latin coursework at an accredited college or university.  Potential applicants who need to beef up their Latin credentials through online  or intensive summer courses are encouraged to check out the offerings at University of Colorado, Denver or the University of Georgia.

Distance graduate students pay slightly higher tuition than in-state, on-campus graduate students. The rate has remained steady for the past several years, still at $544.56 per credit hour for the 2022-23 academic year.  30 credits are required for the Master’s degree; 60 credits (beyond the Master’s level) are required for the PhD degree.  Due to the already low tuition, we do not offer scholarships, but there are $500 travel scholarships available to students to help defray the costs of necessary travel to campus (i.e., for the Summer Latin Institute and exit exams).
