Welcome to the first and oldest Classics distance graduate program in the country!  The UF Department of Classics is proud to offer this opportunity for teachers with a Latin background who’d like to further their education. We offers courses in Latin language and Roman culture and history, as well as a two-week summer intensive on the beautiful UF campus.

Want to Apply for 2020?

Applicants to the MA and ML programs are required to register for an online Latin entrance exam by emailing Dr. Velvet Yates, Distance Learning Director, no later than Friday, January 31, 2020. Master’s applicants will need to provide the name and email address of a proctor to administer and supervise their exam, on either Friday, Feb. 7 or Saturday., Feb. 8 (whichever is more convenient for the applicant). The exam will consist of sight translations of one prose and one poetry passage from standard authors, plus parsing questions based on the translation passages, lasting two hours. Applicants to the PhD program are required to complete an on-campus visit before the application deadline. Please allow at least a half-day for this visit, which will include a 90-minute exam consisting of sight translations of one prose and one poetry passage from standard authors, plus parsing questions based on the translation passages. A sample exam is available here: PhD_entrance_exam_Spring_2016. The applicant will also have short interviews with the Director and available faculty. The campus visit should take place in January or February.

Deferred enrollment is not allowed. Upon admission into the distance learning program, entering students are required to attend the entire Summer Latin Institute, held at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The dates for the 2020 SLI are July 6-16.

To ensure full consideration, applications and all supporting materials should be received no later than Friday, February 28, 2020 (see application checklist below). Please request that your institution send official transcripts directly to UF well in advance of this deadline.
