Summer Latin Institute

SLI 2018: Medieval Latin Literature, Dr. Robert Wagman

The intensive Summer Latin Institute is open only to students enrolled in the UF Graduate Distance Learning Program in Classics. New distance students are required to take this course. Students may also sign up to write a research paper for an additional three credits. It meets for 10 intensive days in July on the UF campus in Gainesville, and is required for all new distance students.

Advising:

All attending students will have an individual advising session with Dr. Yates. A sign-up sheet will be circulated on the first day of the SLI.

Registration:

Dr. Velvet Yates will provide instructions to all distance learning students on registration at the end of the Spring Semester.

Tuition:

Distance students pay approximately $20 more per credit than the in-state tuition rate, so the current distance tuition rate is about $544 per credit hour. If a student registers after the regular registration deadline he/she will be assessed a late registration fee of $100.00. Likewise, if a student does not pay his/her tuition by the fee payment deadline there is a $100.00 late payment fee assessed.

Housing:

There is no dorm housing option, but if you are interested in sharing a room with someone, please let me know (vyates@ufl.edu), and I will put you in contact with other like-minded students. Rooms are available at the UF Reitz Union hotel (https://www.union.ufl.edu/UnionHotel), in the middle of campus (no worries about driving or parking!). Also within easy walking distance is the Holiday Inn University Center (http://theuniversityhotel.com; 352-376-1661), which also has a free airport shuttle. There is an abundance of cheap motels close by (which may require a walk, or taking the bus, to get to our end of campus). Another Holiday Inn, further away from campus but close to I-75, is reported to have a free shuttle to UF (http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/gainesville/gnvsw/hoteldetail). In the past, students have also used Extended Stay America (352-375-0073), a cheap place with a kitchenette, but a bit south of campus on 13th St; you’ll probably need to take a car, bike, or bus to campus.

Transportation:

The local bus is free with a Gator 1 Card. Here is their website, including maps and schedules: http://go-rts.com/). The bus does go to the Gainesville airport. The airport’s website (http://www.gra-gnv.com/) also has information on taxis and shuttles.

Parking:

Parking on and around campus is always VERY difficult. Classics Dept. secretary Tina Williams will coordinate parking permits for the SLI. Please contact her if you plan to park on campus (tiwilliams@ufl.edu). Please try alternate transportation, like the bus, if possible.
